Foundations of Math

August 1-2, October 3, and November 5-6, 2018

Foundations of Math is a research-based training course for all educators of K-12 students who struggle with
mathematics, including and especially those with Individualized Education Plans (IEP).

The course is designed to develop educators’ knowledge of the mathematics they teach by seeing it through
the lens of a well-delineated number sense.

Alt+Shift, encompassing Michigan’s Integrated Mathematics Initiative, is pleased to offer the 5-day course,
developed in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, where participants will:

  • build deep foundational content and pedagogical knowledge
  • learn how to make solid instructional choices that positively impact students
  • connect procedures used in mathematics to conceptual understanding
  • build mathematical understanding & accurately assess learning for a range of learners

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Two versions of Foundations of Math training are being offered. This course is more for general and special educators who are responsible for teaching math to students who struggle with math, including students with disabilities, and may receive their instruction in inclusive settings or resource rooms. If you teach students with moderate to significant disabilities, including students with complex communication needs, or if you teach in self-contained classrooms or center-based programs, you may want to consider registering for Foundations of Math: Teaching Students with Significant Disabilities.

Both courses cover the same content and teach the same approach to instruction. Foundations of Math: Teaching Students with Significant Disabilities includes additional research and examples specifically tailored toward teaching students who take the alternative math assessment and are learning the Common Core Essential Elements.
